Most Japan trips rely heavily on public transportation, and for good reason! Japan is famous for its well-organized and speedy shinkansen (bullet trains) service, and even in smaller locations, there is an amazing public transportation network.
But when moving from place to place by public transportation, what should you do with your luggage?
Luggage Forwarding
For larger and heavier luggage, I strongly recommend utilizing Japan’s amazing luggage forwarding service! For ¥1,500-¥2,000 per bag, depending on weight, your suitcase will be picked up from your original hotel and taken by private courier to your next hotel. This next-day service is so safe and convenient. While your luggage is being sent ahead, you can travel with a smaller overnight bag.
Luggage Storage Seats
If you want to keep your luggage with you, it is possible to take it on the bullet train. On the route between Tokyo and Kyoto, you will need to reserve special luggage storage seats. These seats are at the end of each train car, and the space behind your seats is available exclusively for your luggage.
On other bullet train routes, there is no reservation system for the storage space at the end of each train car, so at busy times of year, I would recommend sending your luggage by courier.
Pack Light
If you are traveling with only a carry-on sized suitcase, you will be able to bring it with you and store it above your seat on all trains. Almost all 3 and 4 star hotels in Japan have a laundry room (5 star hotels generally only have a laundry service), so that you can pack light and do laundry while on your trip to cut down on the amount of luggage you need to bring with you.
